India successfully test fires long range surface-to-air missile ‘Barak-8’

barak-8In further boost to its air defence capabilities, India today successfully test fired a new, long range surface-to-air missile from a defence base off Odisha coast.

Barak-8, the long range surface-to-air missile, has been jointly developed by India and Israel.

According to a DRDO official, the missile was test fired from a mobile launcher at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur at around 10.13 hours today.

“Apart from the missile, the system includes a Multi Functional Surveillance and Threat Alert Radar (MF STAR) for detection, tracking and guidance of the missile,” the DRDO official said.

He pointed out that the missile along with MF-STAR would provide India the  capability to neutralise any aerial threats.

He also added that some more tests of this missile are expected to be conducted shortly.

India had successfully test-fired medium range surface to air missile between June 30 and July 1 this year.  These missiles were also jointly developed by India and Israel.
