Silver UTSAV 2018 starts with MAHE’s own Master Chef

Manipal, March 27: The Silver UTSAV 2018 got underway with Manipal Academy of Higher Education’s own Master Chef on Saturday. The kitchen at Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration’s new Culinary Arts building had a whole lot of competitors vying to be the best in preparing vegetarian, non-vegetarian dishes and topping it off with a delicious dessert.

The cooking competition for the staff of MAHE is the UTSAV opener every year and is followed by flower arrangement and variety entertainment, also for the staff. Both are scheduled to be held on April 2. For the students, the festival begins on April 3. “It’s a lot of fun and the competition is fierce in every event,” said Dr Shobha U Kamath Chairperson, Cultural Coordination Committee, MAHE. As MAHE is celebrating 25 years, Silver is pre-fixed to UTSAV 2018.

Dr Shobha added: “The students of every constituent unit of MAHE will take part. In addition students from Manipal campuses in Mangalore, Bangalore, Sikkim, Dubai and Jaipur will also compete in the four-dayfestival. Mrs Vasanthi R Pai, Chairperson Hostel Management Committee, MAHE and wife of Chancellor, Dr Ramdas M Pai will inaugurate the UTSAV at KMC Greens on April 3 at 6 pm”.

The Students UTSAV opens with painting, cartooning, debate, extempore, instrumental, Indian non classical music and folk dance and will conclude on April 6 with JAM, clay modelling, mime, street play, mad ads and fashion show. The ‘Best of UTSAV 2018’ will be the last event on the programme before the valedictory.

In the cooking competition, WGSHA chefs were the judges and it was live. Participants were required to cook around a ‘secret ingredient’. The Vegetarian Category was won by Ms Ruchi Verna from Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Mr. Kartikey Goswami of School of Communication and Dr. Chithra A of Manipal College of Dental Scienceswere adjudged second and third. The secret ingredient was ‘Raw Banana’.

The Non Vegetarian Category was designed around the starfruit as secret ingredient.Ms Anupa Lewis of School of Communicationwon the first prize. Dr. Rashmi KS from KMC Mangalore and Dr. Anitha S of KMC, Manipal finished a close second and third. Ms. Usha Rani of Prasanna School of Public Health (PSPH) won the first place in desserts with Ms. Ranjani P of Manipal College of Nursing coming second and Piya Mudgal of MAHE Teaching Departments bagging the 3rd place.
